An Introduction to Grading
This lesson covers how to get started with your course gradebook.
Understanding Aggregation Methods
Selecting an aggregation method is how you tell your course how to calculate student grades. If you are weighting your grades (e.g. Quizzes = 40%, Assignments = 40%, Final = 20%), you are likely also using Categories to organize course grades. If you're using categories, you'll also need to specify how the grades in each category should be calculated.
Though you may see multiple options in your course, the three most common grade aggregation types are:
The brief video below covers the differences between each of those three types. This lesson will include a page explaining each one. If you know which aggregation type you need after watching the video below, you can jump straight to that description using the buttons at the bottom of this page.

Changing Your Course Aggregation
- Open Gradebook Setup
- Click Edit in the top-right corner of the table
- It will be in the top row of the table, across from the name of your course
- Select Edit settings
- Click the Aggregation menu
- Select your preferred aggregation type
- Click the Save changes button at the bottom of the page
Note: If you're weighting your grades, and that will involve using categories to organize your grades, you'll likely be using a different aggregation type for the category.
